In this version, Thomas Mitchell dons Santa’s suit to play a man who could be capable of miracles. Sandy Descher stars as the little girl who hangs on to her skepticism, with Teresa Wright co-starring as her mother, a hardworking woman with no time in her schedule to believe.

  • A Light in the Forest

*** 5 Stars Family Fantasy with Lindsay Wagner *** Britta, the new kid at Highland High, has reason to rejoice this Christmas: her sadness has summoned Holly Boy, the very spirit of the season, awakening him from the stony sleep imposed by the dark elf, King Otto. This sets in motion an earthly as well as, an unearthly fight, which rages simultaneously: Young Britta must face her fears and perform a death-defying aerial act in the schools Christmas Pageant, while Holly Boy battles the forces of evil; both battles fought in order to save the school, and the Holly Woods. In the end, it’s not just a fight for a scholarship award or the woods by the school, it’s a fight for Christmas and all the Good Will, and Glad Tidings that the season stands for. • The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas

  • Santa and the Three Bears

This animated color feature finds a mother and her two young cubs eagerly waiting for Santa Claus to visit them in Yellowstone National Park. A kindly forest ranger who first told them about the jolly old elf is persuaded to impersonate Santa, and the young bears help him save the holiday. The film is aimed at a target audience of wide-eyed pre-schoolers.

  • Santa Claus

Yet another oddball Mexican fantasy brought to American audiences by cut-rate exploitation titan K. Gordon Murray, this seasonal tale concerns Santa Claus (Jose Elias Moreno), who we discover doesn’t work out of the North Pole after all. Instead, Santa and his friend and associate Merlin the Magician have a base of operations in a castle orbiting the Earth on a small satellite, upon which they observe the activities of children both good and bad through an elaborate surveillance system. While kids all over the globe (most of whom apparently wear stereotypical native costumes at all times) are trying to be good, the Devil wants to increase youthful misbehavior. With this in mind, he sends his emissary Pitch (Cesareo Quezadas, aka Pulgarcito), a demon with a digestive problem, to Earth and Pitch starts his reign of terror by attempting to goad a little girl from a poor family into stealing the doll that she wants. Eventually, Santa and Merlin catch up with Pitch for a final battle of Good vs. Evil. Santa Claus also offers new insight into St. Nick’s weight, eating habits, and mode of transportation; the film played the kiddie matinee circuit for years, and later was analyzed by Mike Nelson and his robot pals on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
